Sensational match-haul of 13 wickets for 63 runs, including a first-innings hattrick by young pace bowler Sourajit Mohapatra helped Orissa script an innings and 151-run win over Tripura on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
This was Orissa’s 13th overall win, including six by innings margin in 103 First-Class (Ranji Trophy) matches since 1949 and second win in three matches against Tripura. Odisha opening batsman Soumitra Choudhury and allrounder Ranjib Biswal made first-class debut in this match.
While Sourajit Mohapatra destroyed the Tripura batting line-up in both the innings, Ranjib Biswal, Swapan Mitra, Abinasha Khatua and Pannalal Bose shone with the bat in the only innings of the home team, scoring a half-century each.
Put into bat by Tripura captain Sanjib Paul, Orissa declared their first innings at 369 for eight. In reply, Tripura were bowled out for 134 with Sourajit Mohapatra bagging six wickets for 23 runs and captain Harmohan Praharaj picking up three for 43.
Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 235 runs, Tripura folded up for 84 in the second innings to suffer the innings defeat. Continuing his marvelous pace bowling, Sourajit Mohapatra captured seven wickets for 40 runs. Earlier, he became the first Orissa bowler to accomplish a hattrick, dismissing Sanjib Paul, Hiralal Datta and Abhijit Das in successive balls in the first-innings. Wicket-keeper Bose held eight catches in this match, including five in the first innings.
